Help Children Read

Dear ones,

We were blind but now we see: John 9.25!!!  These words may also be called “aha moments”.  For example,  six years ago we realized that children were not going to school in order to come to our adult room to eat their only meal of the day.   Food is not served in schools.   They were also exposed to the marginalized adults that use our services.  What resulted was the formation of our children’s dining room (Comodor Infantil San Benito) that provides a meal after school hours and a take home snack for the evening.

Another “aha moment” occurred, recently, when we realized that most of these children have absolutely NO reading material in their homes unless you count what is written on a bag of beans.   They have never had a children’s book.  How can they be expected to read which is so necessary for learning when their opportunities are so limited.  Also,  a significant percent of their parents are illiterate.

With your help, we would like to give each of the approximately 50 children that use the Comodor Infantil a book of their own to take home for the summer.  We would also like to start a small library and to have volunteers read fun stories to them when the children begin the new school year.

Perhaps, you would consider making a donation of $10 or $20 in honor of your mother for Mother’s Day.   We know that it would make her heart smile.  The Mission social workers will purchase age appropriate books that also address the interests of the niῆos.   Send us your mother’s name with your contribution and it will be placed in our special prayer jar.

Please use this simple act as a means of helping to pave a path out of poverty and to bring  happiness to some of God’s little ones.

Peace and all good,

Fr. Tommy King , OFM

Important note: When making your donation, please add the name of the mother in the Tribute field in order for us to add her to our special prayer jar.
